What is a exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) test?
It is a biomarker of airway inflammation and is commonly associated with asthma (swelling of the lungs). The test is simple and quick to perform and only requires gentle breathing. FeNO is a valuable tool to assist in a diagnosis of asthma. It can also evaluate a chronic cough, or to see how well inhaled corticosteroid (ICS) treatment is working in a patient who has already been diagnosed with asthma.
The data obtained also provides meaningful information which allows your doctor to prescribe the right amount of inhalers that will aid you in controlling your asthma symptoms and prevent exacerbations.
Preparations: Please avoid smoking, caffeine, alcohol and nitrate-rich foods, such as leafy green vegetables and beets at least one hour prior to the test
